Syria has been through eight years of civil war. This has caused massive material damage, more than half of the population have been displaced, the country faces major and complex humanitarian challenges, and a high number of Syrians are either dead or wounded. The war is still ongoing, but the number of violent incidents has decreased significantly over the last couple of years. In large parts of the government-controlled areas, relatively few violent incidents are recorded today compared to previously. Other parts of Syria still face violence and conflict. In Idlib and northern Hama, ongoing clashes continued throughout the summer of 2019.
