SUMMARY
Palestinian refugees who arrived in Syria in 1948 and their descendants counted more than 500 000 individuals in 2011. Due to the civil war, some have fled the country. Two thirds of those remaining are internally displaced today. The Palestinians are registered in a separate population registry and given legal residence in Syria. Different kinds of official Syrian identity documents are issued to them. They can also apply for travel documents. A relatively small group of Palestinians who arrived to Syria around 1970, are not registered and not issued with official Syrian identity documents or travel documents.
